- the ERA - Equal Rights Amendment - may come up for a vote in the Illinois House today but may be postponed by supporters if they can't get enough votes for passage

- Three electrical workers were severely burned today in an explosion in the underground deep-tunnel project in Mt. Prospect, IL near Council Trail and Elmhurst Road

- Careless smoking is blamed on a morning fire at 2808 West North Avenue that caused the death of 34-year old Curtis Williams

- A crew filming the James Caan movie "The Thief" wanted a fake fire but wound up with a real one instead, due to an explosion inside the house at 2858 West Catalpa Avenue [note: the film would eventually be released as just Thief on March 27th 1981]

- The City Council is expected to approve Mayor Jane Byrne's school board nominees, including Thomas Ayers, former chief of Commonwealth Edison, who was initially questioned regarding residency requirements

- Secretary of State Edmund Muskie (sworn in just 6 days earlier) calling for NATO allies to impose economic sanctions on Iran due to their taking of hostages

- Iran officials say 2 American men are in a prison in Tehran and charged in connection to last month's failed rescue mission. Iranian President Banisadr says an international conference will be held in Tehran in early June to prove Iran's claims of American crimes against that nation

- Group of prisoners at the Norfolk Virginia City Jail overpowered four law officials and held them hostage for 3 hours

- Carter Administration plans to appeal a federal court ruling preventing President Carter's dime-a-gallon gasoline fee from going into effect tomorrow

- Search for bodies in yesterday's killer tornado in Kalamazoo, Michigan continues

- Weather forecast for Chicagoland area
