Here's a commercial for the home video game Laser Blast by Activision, touting itself as "A New Game Cartridge for Your Atari Video Game System" (and contrasting itself to its "dull" predecessors). The purpose is to go after the other side's force fields and dodge their tracking systems. (Ah, remember those good ol' days? ;-) )

"Atari"(R) and "Video Computer System"(TM) are trademarks of Atari, Inc.

With a lower-third super towards the end as to what sto...

Prospect Federal Savings - "Mining for Check$avers" (Commercial, 1982)

Here's a commercial for Prospect Federal Savings, with a gold prospector describing the bank's "Check$aver" N.O.W. account (which pays 5-1/4% interest compounded daily and is insured to $100,000) as he's looking for gold in the lake.

What's the deal with banks and prospectors back then?

Prospect Federal was located at 555 East Butterfield Road (across from Yorktown Mall) in Lombard, and tw...

Tele1st - "Scrambled Delights" (1984)

Here's an example of some scrambled programming on Tele1st. As Chris (Phantom) described earlier, we see the picture cycling between normal and inverted (negative) colors. And the sound has a constant sharp percussive beat in the background while the program audio sounds like it is smooshed together.

All in all, I wouldn't have wanted to be a teenager on drugs while watching this.
I edited together some segments separated by fade-outs. This was worth $25.95...

WVTV Channel 18 [Milwaukee, WI] - "Partial EBS Test" (1980)

Here's a partial test of the Emergency Broadcasting System on an unknown station in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. The person was recording some Woody Woodpecker cartoons and although they cut out the commercials they did decide to record most of the EBS test. It's pretty simple, consisting only of a single, rather discolored slide.

Did they have to traumatize kids by airing these tests during cartoons? It seems like they did the same thing in Chicago too from what I recall....
