Here's Part 2 of an installment of Donahue that aired on WBBM Channel 2, hosted by Phil Donahue, with Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Jim Nabors and George Lindsey reminiscing about their days on The Andy Griffith Show and promoting their upcoming reunion TV-movie, Return to Mayberry, which would air on the NBC Network on April 13th 1986; this was also a few months before Griffith began a nine-year run on TV as crafty defense lawyer Ben Matlock. (By this time, Donahue ...

WNBQ Channel 5 - The Dorsey Connors Show (Part 1, 1963)

Here's Part 1 of an edition of The Dorsey Connors Show on WNBQ Channel 5 (which, like most shows of this period, is only available via 16mm kinescope film). Ms. Connors, who died on September 5th 2007, was a fixture on Chicago radio and television in the early years of the latter medium, with a daytime program that was along the lines of shows such as that of Lee Phillip on WBBM Channel 2. But whereas Ms. Phillip continually remade herself (and in the process, remained a Chicago TV p...

WCAE Channel 50 - 3-2-1 Contact (Technical Difficulties Moment, 1980)

Here's a strange technical difficulties moment from an airing of the series 3-2-1 Contact on the PBS station WCAE Channel 50 (St. John, Indiana) - which later became WYIN Channel 56. (giving up the Channel 50 frequency which would then be taken over by WPWR-TV)

We start, innocently enough, with the animated CTW (Children's Television Workshop) logo opening, already in progress, followed by the opening titles sped way-up. Now wait - you might assume that this is the tec...

Here's Part 2 of Midwest Sports Special - "Inside the World of Hockey with the Chicago Blackhawks," hosted by Frank Sweeney, as aired on WBKB (now WLS) Channel 7. This was transferred from the original film, and thus has no commercials. Featured in this part are general manager Tommy Ivan, coach Billy Reay, and (demonstrating their skills on the ice) players Phil Esposito, Chico Maki, John McKenzie, Eric Nesterenko, Fred Stanfield, Stan Mikita, Bill Hay, Al MacNeil, Pierre Pilote and...

WFLD Channel 32 - Chicago Stuff (Part 1, 1985)

Here's a lost Koz Klassic! - Chicago Stuff - was it a failed pilot? A consolation prize from Fox Television for cancelling Son of Svengoolie a month later? A half-remembered dream? It only aired once, at 10pm on a Sunday in December 1985 - so you couldn't be blamed for not knowing it existed. (I only heard rumors) In any case, it's a neat little package of Rich's schtick, so just think of it as an extremely early episode of The Koz Zone. :-)

WCIU Channel 26 - The Ginny Tiu Show (Part 1, 1969)

Here's Part 1 of The Ginny Tiu Show which aired on WCIU Channel 26. Ms. Tiu was a child prodigy pianist whose chief claim to fame was playing by ear and not being able to read a note, and who was a familiar presence on such 1960's TV series as The Ed Sullivan Show, Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall, and a 1966 episode of I've Got a Secret (from Steve Allen's run as host), as well as appearing in the 1962 Elvis Presley film Girls! Girls! Girls! In later years, ...

WFLD Channel 32 - Keyfax Nite-Owl Service (Opening, 7/16/82)

Here's another rare example of WFLD Channel 32's Keyfax Nite-Owl Service, notably the first six minutes thereof on this particular day.

Nite-Owl was WFLD's equivalent to two primitive (by today's standards), digital-based overnight "tele-text" services prevalent on British television, BBC's long-running Ceefax and ITV's (Independent Television, the commercial TV outlet) Oracle. Ceefax lasted up to the end of analogue television in England in ...
