WCIX Channel 6 - Snipets - "Girls Play Ball Too" (1984)

Here's another rare Snipets segment! These originally were created by and aired on the Kaiser Broadcasting / Field Communications stations such as WFLD Channel 32, in the 70s and early 80s. However, with the sale and dissolution of Field starting in 1982, for whatever reason Snipets segments popped up on a few other non-Field or former-Field stations, even as late as 1986!

This particular airing came from a non-Field station, WCIX Channel 6 (now WFOR Channel 4) in Miami - Fort Lauderdale, FL. I'll bet the people that made the decision to run these knew that Field was out of business by this point and figured that these were essentially in the public domain. They probably needed some cheap PSA-type filler and thus turned to Der Schnipets. I wonder where they got the tapes of them though?

In this segment, three boys (done in the style of Art Clokey's claymation-style characters in Davey & Goliath) are at a basketball court shooting hoops, looking for another player when a girl comes by to ask if she can play, to which the blond-haired boy dismissively says, "Girls can't play ball" (his rationale: "just because"), after which she asks for a try and effortlessly throws the ball into the basket. Then the boy challenges her to an overhead throw - and they both miss, leading him to conclude that "we both need practice" and invite her onto the team. At the end of this segment, it dissolves to a station ID slide with drawings of four children, and a voiceover (by ??) advising, "From your friends at WCIX Channel 6" (which was put in place of the "Produced by Field Communications" notice that was kept for the Field stations' airings) (or even earlier, the "Produced by Kaiser Broadcasting" notice).

This aired on local Miami / Fort Lauderdale TV on the morning of Sunday, Februrary 5th 1984. (1974 Copyright) (Not from Chicago, but still an important part of SnipetsHistory)
