Garfield Goose and Friends - "Mama Goose & Cornhusk Dolls" (1974)

Here's one of only a few existing Garfield Goose and Friends segments, this one featuring a visit from Mama Goose as well as Hobby Corner with Amy Simon and her cornhusk dolls. All the cartoon and non-studio segments have been removed. (I assume this wasn't from an off-air recording)

Has anyone tried to track down Ms. Amy Simon who lived on Wesley Avenue in Evanston, IL who has 1 sister (now around 48 years old) and 1 brother (now around 46 years old)? Amy herself would be around 44 or so now. Oh, she also went to Oakton Elementary School‎ in Evanston. (Geez, that's a lot of information)

These shows were all done live, right?

Assuming that, based on what Fraizer says at the beginning, this one aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, March 14th 1974 @ 8am!

Oh, right - forgot about that. So, what's the deal with this one? It originally aired live, right? Then perhaps they kept the tape and eventually re-ran the episode and put a "Pre-Recorded" slide on it at the beginning - and made another recording of it this way. Then, the "pre-recorded slide" version is the one that they somehow wound up keeping all these years. Is that what probably happened?

Here's another possibility...I remember an aircheck of Larry Lujack on WCFL wherein he stated, during the lead-in to an ad spot featuring him "The following is transcribed" (i.e. a recording). Someone subsequently explained that under AFTRA rules, announcers/DJs et al. were not paid extra for spots they presented live, but they WERE paid extra for pre-recorded material. Perhaps there was a similar differential for live versus recorded material?

Or...I'm sure it was just easier, and offered more control of the final product, to tape the show beforehand.

Nice to see a clip of Frazier in his most famous role. He was one of the giants of Chicago TV.

Poly - The year of 1981 jibes. That could be her! I honestly can't believe that she wouldn't be aware that the clip of her segment exists - it's been around for so long. Even if she didn't find out about it on her own, I would have thought someone would have tried to contact her already. The hard part is that if she's married, her last name would likely have changed.

There was a special on around Christmas last year about Ray Rayner, Bozo, Garfield Goose, and others, recounting some moments from classic Chicago TV, and when they showed the Garfield Goose opening, it also said "Pre-Recorded". Maybe the only recordings still in existence were those that were rebroadcasts?

Yep, Ringy, you hit it on the head. This show was on for over 20 years, and we have about 20 minutes of material from it. This clip and one other, and one in black and white from when the Sox won the pennant - that's it (as far as I know). Isn't that pitiful? And yes, that special is called "Bozo, Gar & Ray" and they are showing it every Christmas time now.

A Dr. Norman Simon still lives on Wesley Ave. in Evanston. He's on the faculty at Northwestern, and I'm guessing he's the corn-husk girl's father.

The one other clip--is it the final episode? I remember there were a couple of pieces of the final episode in Bozo Gar & Ray.

There's also that kinescope clip from 1965(?) that was included in the special.

And Fuzzy, if she's thought all these years that the episode was gone, and if nobody in her circle of friends and family had a collector's interest in old TV...then I could easily see how she might not know this clip exists. Remember, the subject of the song "The Girl From Ipanema" said, decades later, she'd had no idea that the song was about her!

SuperCFL - You know, you're right - I forgot about the clips from the final episode that were on Bozo, Gar, and Ray. No, I don't have those and don't know if the entire episode exists or what. I just have the other clip with Gar's "weather prediction rope". Still, it is really sad the amount of material that survives for a show that was on every weekday for over 20 years.
