WFLD Channel 32 - Afternoon Fun - "The Banana Splits" (Promo, 1982)

Just unearthed from a Umatic tape today! Here's the only Banana Splits footage from WFLD yet found - a promo (about 95% complete) during a presentation of the Monkees on Lunchtime Fun. They were on at 3:30pm during this time.

Just for the heck of it I also left in the Monkees bumper at the end.

If I'm not mistaken, this was during the last few months of the Banana Splits' run on WFLD.

Voiceover by Dr. Don.

This aired on local Chicago TV on Wednesday, June 23rd 1982 during the 12 noon to 12:30pm half-hour.

This clip aired on Wednesday, June 23rd 1982, and is included in the following categories:
  • 1980s
  • WFLD Channel 32

    It's 1982 all right.

TV Guide stopped printing episode descriptions for local daytime repeats by this time. Using the hint of the episode title (episode 14,) and knowing that WFLD started airing the Monkees on June 21, I am going to date this to around July 8, 1982 at noon.

Good estimate - let's go with that. :-)

By the way, there are a few of these tapes that have Monkees episodes off WFLD from this same time period, but other than this and another promo and some bumper artifacts (that we already have examples of) everything is cut out. There's really nothing of note left in them. Worth saving the episodes themselves, or not? (remember, space is at a premium) (I would of course save the promos and anything we don't have yet)

By save, what do you mean? Converting them to DVD or putting them on here?

WAIT! I screwed up on the episode name!!!! The Monkees episode is Captain Crocodile!!!!

That makes it episode 23, changing the 32 airdate to Wednesday July 23,1982.

Ok, I'll update it. I guess we're pretty darn sure of the date now, based on how WFLD showed Monkees episodes.

I meant save them as in transfer to DVD.

Fuzzy, WFLD aired a good amount of "rare" Monkees eps. Rare in that, back when the Monkees were originally rerun in the 60's on NBC, they would alter the songs featured on the shows to keep up with the Monkees latest records. These altered shows are what WFLD would typically air. So please do archive the Monkees eps. I, for one, am interested in them! The versions of the episodes available on dvd are the original broadcast airings which are different than what you have.

antifrodis - Ok, I'll just transfer the whole episodes. I knew I remembered you saying something along these lines before. :-)

I agree with Frodis. Please save.

I agree with Frodis. Frodis, you must be a fan of the Monkees (I won't say more because that would be a great trivia question). Btw, am I the only one who thinks it's funny they aired a Banana Splits promo during the Monkees? Get it, monkeys eat bananas.

Yes, the DVDs are with the original music. I wish they had included both the original and altered music.

Does anyone know if the Nick episodes that aired in 1987 have the altered music as well?

@ szake: Not that I know of.

Question for Fuzzy. Do you know what the 1st version of the Afternoon Fun opening sounded like? This tune been stuck in my head ever since.

@szake. Yes, in some cases Nick did use the alternate music in episoses. Episodes they aired that come to mind right away are "Royal Flush", "The Chaperone", "One Man Shy", "Monkees on Tour" and "Success Story".

This has got me bugged and I'm going to look online. If I recall correctly, around this time (or rather pre 1986) many/most stations still aired the altered episodes. When the Monkees were aired on MTV (I could be wrong though) I believe those were mostly the original. However, while looking for something else completely, I remember reading that there are several versions still around, and depending on the station you could have a different song. Not just the music either. There is a segment on the episode "Too Many Girls" that's usually censored (a closeup of the actress in a bkini) but in some prints it's still there.

This was the biggest issue (the music) that many people had with the DVDs. Supposedly, Rhino is going to reprint the DVDs with different music versions. Personally I think they should have done that first. Like mentioned above, they did that because during the first round of syndication the Monkees (three of them) were still performing.

If I remember correctly, MTV and Nick both used the same prints that were distibuted by Colex. These prints then were trimmed to add more commercials when the show went into syndication the summer of 1986 when it aired on Channel 50.

I think that from day one, Rhino should have had an option to select which soundtrack you wanted: The original airing soundtrack, the dubbed 1967 soundtrack or the CBS 1969 rerun soundtracks.

Fuzzy: I remember you had a "Monkees Screw Up" that was from the Captain Crocodile episode. Do you have the scene where Micky is reading a story to the kids. When it first aired, he said "Once upon a time in the land of Kirschner" but it got redubbed to be "Once upon a time in the land of Schneider" due to the whole Don Kirschner controversy. I have only seen the former and I think it would be quite a find if you have a copy with the "Schneider" dub.

smctopia - That Monkees screw-up was a clip that I got way back when I first started collecting, around 1992 or so. Unfortunately, at that time I would only transfer off the commercial breaks or other interesting bits instead of the complete shows. Now I know better. :-)

The good news is that I recently made contact again with the person I got that clip from (and some others) so many years ago and he still has his tapes. He lives in New York now so it might be awhile before I get access to them, but eventually I'll redub the entire thing. (It'll be a quality upgrade too since I originally lost a generation by going to VHS)

So what did WFLD used to show, the Original soundtrack, the dubbed 1967 or CBS 1969 re-run version?

Comment posted by FuzzyMemories on Monday, November 30th, 2009 at 6:14 PM

I can't say for sure which ones WFLD showed but the Colex-distributed ones had some of each. I think it depends on who distributed the episodes. For example, "Royal Flush" can be seen with its original song "This Just Doesn't Seem to Be My Day" on some syndicated prints, MTV/Nick showed the 1967 rerun featuring "You Told Me" and also some syndicated prints had this. There is also a print with the unreleased song "Apples, Peaches, Bananas and Pears" that I think was aired during a CBS rerun but I've also seen it years later. Also, some episodes show the wrong song titles at the end because they've been redubbed.

Smctopia - I checked and the episode that aired on WFLD in 1984 that I have here has the "Schneider" dub!
