WTTW Channel 11 - Movie Eleven - "Dr. Who" (Opening, 1976)

Here is some amazing, ancient footage that really has no business existing.
;-)

Finally the "classic" Movie Eleven opening from the 70's, complete. Prior to this the only footage I found was a brief snippet of the title card. This was a unique night because they were showing a 4 part episode of Dr. Who, "The Claws of Axos". The showed the episodes back-to-back with a brief intermission between 2 and 3. However, they didn't do much editing - they left a lot of the credits from each episode intact. This could be thought of as the pre-cursor to their 1981 shift to airing movie-length compilations of episodes. (where the episode endings and beginnings were usually unnoticable)

I love the music - anyone know where it came from? Sounds like a moog or something similar. I think I'm going to make this my ringtone. :-)

And now an episode of - "Fuzzy's All-Stars". Meet Larry Charet. He was the owner of "Larry's Comic Book Store", the first comic specialty store in Chicago and one of the first in the country, which closed in 2002. The store opened in April of 1972, and was run by Larry at the same location - 1219 West Devon Avenue - for 30 years. He lived upstairs, where as legend tells, he recorded a lot of wonderful stuff on video. This particular recording was made about 4 days after the purchase of his first Betamax! Stay tuned over the coming months for more incredible gems from his collection (now part of this museum) that will be sure to make your jaw drop. Larry Charet: home-video recording pioneer, and one of Fuzzy's All-Stars. ;-)

Voiceover by Don Ferris.

This aired on local Chicago TV on Saturday, September 25th 1976. (at 7pm!)

Interesting historical side note - according to Wikipedia, on the same day, 9-25-76 - "The Irish rock band U2 is formed after drummer Larry Mullen Jr. posts a note seeking members for a band on the notice board of his Dublin school.

Fuzzy, were you asking about the Movie 11 music, or the Dr. Who music?

Larry's Comic Book Store...now there's a place I haven't thought of since 1987, when I bought my copy of "Macross: Perfect Memory" there!

Great to hear he was also performing a service for Chicago area TV history!

We were able to get a better, less washed-out transfer of the original tape, so I upgraded the video file on this one.
