WMAQ Channel 5 - NewsCenter5 - "Disco Demolition Already In Progress" (1979)

Here's a news clip from NewsCenter 5 on WMAQ Channel 5 giving an update on the Disco Demolition fiasco at Comiskey Park that night.

Mike Pumo reports via phone to Jim Ruddle that the second game of the double-header has been cancelled along with some other details.

I am assuming that this report was from the regular 10pm news that night - and assuming that this was their lead story, can we assume then that the 2nd game was officially cancelled around 10pm that night?

This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, July 12th 1979.

This was on ABC just this morning. (7/14)

They had a brief interview with Steve Dahl.

I didn't know that the Bee Gees (according to him) blamed Steve for the death of disco! Interesting!

I remember Channell 11 aired a documentary of Disco Demolition Night five years ago. That documentary had since gone to DVD. If there was one lesson to be learned from that experience, is that a promotion can be too successful.

Briefly at the end of the clip is a picture of Carmine Galante, a Bonnano Mafia Family Capo. He was "hit" on July 12th 1979 at Joe and Mary's Italian Restaurant in Brooklyn, NY.

I was wondering who that was, thanks DrJCC (Joliet Junior College?) :-)

I was there the next day july 13th, it was my birthday. I turned 14

The field was in horrible shape, the outfield was "painted" green with spray paint to make it look like grass.
They made us wait about an hour and a half because the players didn't want to come out.

Finally they called the game and gave us a rain check. We never saw one pitch.
Most people just stuck around and drank, and being a kid i ran around collecting cups.

This happened exactly on my birthday, but since I lived in Florida I didn't hear much about it until some time later.

I really don't believe disco was all that bad. The real problem was that it became so ridiculously popular that it was everywhere, and pretty much everything was being done as disco. There was a lot of garbage with a dance beat that was put out back then, and people just got sick of it. But that's no excuse for violence. It would have just faded away quietly in a matter of time if this hadn't happened.

Thanks to "hardlines4" on YouTube, we now know the name and composer of the piece of music used as the theme to Movie Greats heard here!

It is the theme from the 1965 movie "36 Hours" - "A Heart Must Learn to Cry" and it is performed here by Marty Gold and his Orchestra.

Here's a link to download the full track:

PVX: I was a master control operator in the 1990s and 2000s, and the ISCI codes were 4 letters and 4 numbers. An Ad Council public service announcement started with the letter C and three letters for the campaign, the digits would start with the year the spot was created, the revision or version number, and the last 2 digits being the length of the ad, so a 30 second Smokey the Bear Forest Fire Prevention PSA from 1999 would have been CNFF-9130.
