Speaking of the Cubs, the Cubs won yesterday!!!!!

For the opening push in shot of Family Classics before the book close up, do you think that is a pre-tape they used week after week? The lighting is very low key in that shot, and high key in Frazier's close up.

What's that saying about bad things coming in threes? Sadat wound up becoming the third major world leader shot in 1981 (President Reagan and Pope John Paul II being the others).

Odd that they had Hal Linden bundled up for this, but he wasn't actually outside to demonstrate.

The announcer on that Sears spot sounds suspiciously like Val Bettin, best known to many here as WTTW's "The Storyteller", especially when he says, "twelve ninety-nine". Can anyone confirm that?

POWWW! POWWW! POWWW! (obscenity) POWWW! (Lord's name in vain) POWWW! POWWW! WHY WON'T THIS THING WORK (more obscenities)...I know quite a few adults who would've made this game more entertaining on the air.

WGN's New York City sister station, WPIX Channel 11, had a famous variant of this Tv POWWW gimmick during this same period; their version was called Tv PIXxx. Unlike here, the various games were presided over by off-screen staff announcers Bill Biery and Ralph Lowenstein, with alternations among still slides, video CGI's, and the primitive computer games in place then.

Ralph Penza was mostly a fixture on New York City television. At the time of this aircheck, he'd left WCBS Channel 2 (where he'd been since the mid-'60's) for then-sister station WCAU the year before. He'd return to New York in 1980 for a long run at WNBC Channel 4 (of which WCAU is now a sister station) that lasted on and off to not long before his death in 2007. On YouTube is a brief clip of a Sunday newscast anchored by Penza on WCBS in early to mid-1976, just prior to his joining WCAU.

It was around this time that WCAU replaced their prior color cameras (apparently RCA TK-42) with the same Thomson TTV-1518's as in use at WBBM.
